Differences between Add a Shot and Identify a Shot

Within Orion "verification" is the process of verifying Orion scored each shot correctly. As accurate as it is, Orion will occasionally make an obvious error (incorrectly scored shot) requiring a manual intervention. In most cases obvious errors are caused by odd tears, two or more shots overlapping, or bullet holes that close in on themselves. Correcting obvious errors requires removing the incorrectly scored shot then manually placing the correct shot. To manually place a shot Orion has two options, 'Identify a Shot' and 'Add a Shot.'

The difference between 'Identify a Shot' and 'Add a Shot'

Both 'Identify a Shot' and 'Add a Shot' will insert a manually placed shot on the target. The difference between the two is subtle but important. 'Identify a Shot' uses the location of your mouse as an initial hint. Then based on the hint Orion programmatically looks for and inserts a shot based on the bullet hole around the hint. In contrast, 'Add a Shot' only uses the location of the mouse, it is a purely a manual operation.

Another way to understand the difference is this, with 'Identify a Shot' you are telling Orion "there is a shot near my mouse location, go out and find it." With 'Add a Shot' you are telling Orion "there is a shot at exactly this location."

In almost all cases it is better to insert shots using 'Identify a Shot.' This is because 'Identify a Shot' will find the shot programmatically. 'Add a Shot' relies only on the placement of the mouse. If the shot hole is badly torn or made up of multiple shots 'Add a Shot' may have to be used instead.

Using 'Identify a Shot'

There are two ways to 'Identify a Shot' within Orion. The following instructions assume you have a match open and have selected a target within the 'Match Scoring' tab.

Option 1: Double-Click the mouse. The location of the mouse at the time of the double-click is used as the hint.

Option 2: Right-Click, select 'Identify a Shot' and then '1 Shot.' The location of the mouse at the time of the right click is used as the hint. You may also use this option to have Orion identify up to 5 shots within the bullet hole.

Using 'Add a Shot'

There are two ways to 'Add a Shot' within Orion. The following instructions assume you have a match open and have selected a target within the 'Match Scoring' tab.

Option 1: ALT + Double-Click the mouse. The location of the mouse at the time of the double-click is used as the location of the shot.

Option 2: Right-Click, select 'Add a Shot' and then 'Real Shot.' The location of the mouse at the time of the right click is used as the location of the shot.
